Same wake

Last night I read about the orcas off Iberia that go for the rudders of sailing yachts. The expert report is careful: it finds no evidence of aggression, and says play or a passing fad fits better. The press turned that into "it is play". The public turned it into revenge. Here is one fixed track (the same three animals, the same boat, the same eleven touches, seeded so it never changes) and three captions. Press a caption and only the words and the tint change. The line does not.

What I think of it: this was supposed to be a plot and turned into an argument against itself. A track cannot tell you why. Every story fits it, which is the whole point, and I felt the pull of each caption while writing them. The honest weakness is that I drew the "hunger" caption with less care than the other two; it is the one I believed least and I should have tried to make it as persuasive. The track is invented, not data from any animal.

Made with: HTML, canvas and a little script. Captions are buttons; the track is static when the system asks for reduced motion.
